There is nothing more natural to a parent than kissing a newborn’s soft pink feet and counting its tiny toes. But once the baby starts to take its first steps, it is not so easy to know if its feet are developing normally.

The good news is that doctors no longer take such drastic corrective measures when dealing with most foot disorders. In fact, many such conditions aren’t considered problems at all. “A baby’s foot undergoes many changes that aren’t serious, don’t require any treatment, and are often normal parts of development,” says Micheal Goldbearg, M.D., F.A.A.P., Professor and Chairman of orthopedics at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

Although the adult shoe has changed from being a protective covering to becoming a status symbol, the child’s shoe has remained in its basic sole-protecting the foot from the hazards of the outside world. Regardless of age, a shoe’s main purpose is to provide a protective covering during cold weather and prevent injury caused by stepping on sharp objects outdoors. But when kids are just learning to walk, they need plenty of shoeless time. Inside the house, socks with rubberized soles will provide protection without the risk of falling. But kids at some point have to leave the safety of their house and be able to move outside, without endangering their feet. Thus, when parents are buying a child’s shoes it is important to remember to have their babies’ and children’s feet measured by an experienced salesperson as nobody wants the shoe to slip while the kid is walking or to rub against the ankle or toes. “Make sure both feet are measure while the child is standing!” adds Dr. Micheal Goldbearg.

A recent survey of professionals who give advice on children’s feet, including pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons, pediatric orthopedics, and podiatrists, revealed wide divergence of opinion regarding shoes and footwear in both normal and problematic feet. Then, what is a parent left to do? The only rational approach to the subject is to examine some traditional ideas in the light of recent studies and experience, so as to determine if the professional views should be upheld or discarded.

1. Shoes are necessary to promote foot development: In other words normal children’s feet need support, otherwise they will become flat. Recent studies seem to contradict this. Feet deformities like bunions and hammer-toes are very rare among children who wear no shoes, in contrast to those who do, where such deformities are commonly detected.

2. High-top shoes are necessary to support the ankle as the child takes its first steps: Well-meaning but misinformed relatives often perpetrate this myth. Studies have shown that when a child is strong enough to stand up and walk, he will have ankles strong enough to support his body.

3. Sneakers, if worn for more than a couple of hours a day, are bad for children: This is a widely held belief among consumers as well as professionals. There is absolutely no evidence that normal feet develop into flatfeet if tennis shoes rather then hi-top or leather shoes are used.

4. Shoe salesmen are competent to diagnose foot problems and advise remedial shoe war for children: This is totally erroneous. Most shoe salesmen are well intentioned and desire to sell you the most comfortable shoes they can find. But they are not trained to give advice regarding foot problems. Responsible salesmen should suggest to parents that their child should visit a doctor, in case its feet do not appear right.

5. The Price of Shoes: The price of shoes is often related to the kind of material used. Leather is the most expensive, especially if it used for both uppers and soles. Since leather allows the feet to “breathe” in the shoes it helps avoid sweat accumulation and skin irritation. But while leather uppers are desirable, leather soles are not necessary and can be replaced by rubber or crepe soles.

6. The Soles of the Shoes: The soles of the shoes whether leather or rubber, should be thick enough to protect, yet flexible enough for walking. It is also important to look at the bottom of the soles to determine depth of the grooves. The deeper the grooves the better the traction.

7. Fitting Children’s Shoes: Parents must remember looking for a pair of shoes to fit their child’s feet, not vice versa. To get a good fit, both the shape and the size of the shoes should comfort to its feet. Foot size increases whether standing, sleeping, or running. Once the shoes are on, parents should check for adequate length and width, depending on their child’s unique case.

8. The Appropriate Shoe: Certain types of shoes are appropriate depending on the child’s age. Babies and crawlers do not need shoes. They only need booties, warm socks, or pre-walking shoes that do not bind feet. Shoes for toddles, on the other hand, age 9months to 3 years, should allow the foot to breathe due to perspiration. Style and shoe-fit is important for school-age children. For any child age, parents should be aware that problems such as flatfeet or high arch could be developed, and they should always pay attention to the anatomic nature of the shoes purchased.

Biking is such a popular sport and there are many wide varieties of bikes on the market, in a varied pricing range. But for those serious athletes, the custom-built bike might be the way to go.

Ever heard of Randonneuring? Sounds French, doesn’t it? Well, the sport originated in France, but is becoming more and more popular in the United States.

Randonneuring is “long-distance unsupported endurance cycling.” You may have heard of it as “Ultra Long Distance Cycling.”

The joy of this sport is that it is non-competitive. Riders indulge in friendly camraderie, not trying to drive each other into the ground. And because the rides are “unsupported” - the idea is to be self sufficient.

There are many events held for Randonneur riding, but the names of winners are not posted. Rather, the names of the riders who have finished the course are posted in alphabetical order. It’s not about beating anyone, it’s about challenging yourself.

These events consist of rides of 200, 300, 400, 600, and 1000 KM for individual riders. Each of these distances is called a “brevet.” There are probably events being held in your area, even if you’ve never heard of them before. Search the web under “randoneuring” or “ultra long distance cycling” and you’ll find any local clubs.

Now, it’s when road riders want to participate in racers and ultra long distance cycling that they’ll want a custom-built road bike rather than one purchased just off the rack.

It’s not that bikes purchased just off the rack aren’t perfectly serviceable for most riders, but serious athletes - professionals, and those just below the professoinal level - will certainly want a custom-built bike - one that is precisely fitted to their body. (Customized bikes, and custom-built bikes, are two different things. Customized bikes swap out various pieces for better fitting pieces, whereas custom-built bikes are built to certain specifications from the ground up.)

Triathletes are another group of people who need custom-built bikes. In a triathlon, the participants have to swim, cycle and then run for certain distances. It’s an incredibly grueling sport and so the cycle has to be the lightest, the most sturdiest, and the best fitted piece of equipment they have.

Many bike companies offer customized road bikes, and while they are expensive, they’re not as expensive as they used to be because with new technology always comes lower prices. It’s possible to purchase your customized bike from a local dealer, but for a custom-built bike, most likely you’ll have to go online.

Companies that offer custom-builds include Guru, Waterford, and Titus. Do a search on the web to find them, and they’ll tell you all the information you need to know to get a custom-built bike.

Tracing its routes back to postwar Britain, Land Rover has been one of the most recognized names on the Australian outback, the African savannah, and in many other far flung places around the world. Since 1948, Land Rover has rivaled Jeep and Toyota in providing the most versatile 4×4 vehicles on the planet. Today, the Defender model continues to trudge on with important updates scheduled for the 2007 model year. Please read on to capture the essence of a brand that has admirably served driver and passenger for nearly six full decades.

Straight from the rubble of the Second World War, Britain was in need of a vehicle that could serve farmers, the military, government officials, and the like. Particularly in the hilly midlands of central England, not just any car would do in a bid to carry doctors, veterinarians, and military personnel on their rounds. If a road became impassable, no motorcar could be trusted to do the job. Enter Land Rover.

The first Land Rover is actually derived from the American jeep that saw duty throughout the war. Using a Jeep chassis, brothers Maurice and Spencer Wilks, both of whom worked for British automaker Rover decided that the Land Rover would go into production. Six decades later the company has evolved and changed ownership numerous times and the Defender, once offered for sale in the U.S., is no longer available in America.

Land Rover’s decision to keep the Defender out of the U.S. market is hinged on one very important fact: the vehicle doesn’t meet current stringent U.S. safety requirements. In particular, the Defender wasn’t able to be fitted with front passenger airbags, a requirement mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Because of the limited number of models sold in the U.S. and the big expense of preparing the Defender for airbags, Land Rover decided to quit importing the model in 1998.

Defender enthusiasts mourned the decision, but knew that given some time the Defender model would reappear in the U.S. For the 2007 model year many changes have been made, but not enough to bring the storied Defender back to the U.S. The current updates, although many, are seen as only interim changes before an all new Defender is expected to be marketed in 2010. That model just may meet all of the safety requirements found lacking in the current rendition of the Defender.

For 2007 the Defender will see the following changes according to the company’s August 2006 press release:

–Introduction of a 2.4L common rail diesel engine

–A 6-speed gearbox for better off-roading and cruising abilities

–New front end treatment, better heating/ventilation, more comfortable seating

–The third row seat on the extended wheelbase model will be reversed to face front

Additionally, the Sport model will get the 3.6L V8 diesel now found in the Range Rover.

Alas, all of this good news does little for the American consumer other than perhaps encouraging them to remind their local Land Rover dealer that a road ready American Defender would certainly be welcome. With parent Ford Motor Company mulling the sale of both Land Rover and Jaguar, those changes are likely to come later, rather than sooner.

Imagine. Your baby, now 4 years old, has just completed her first day at kindergarten. You’re waiting anxiously for the return of the school bus, praying that she enjoyed her first day at school, that everything went well, that she’ll be OK. She gets off the bus. You rush forward to hug her. And she’s in tears. Through her sobbing, barely able to understand what she’s saying, you desperately try to find out the cause of her meltdown. Gradually, between sobs, you hear little Apple mumble “they made fun of my name. I’m never going back there. Never.”

Happily, this is not a true story. (As far as I know). But when you’re trying to select your new baby’s name, it’s something you definitely want to avoid.

Picking a name for your baby, especially your first, is not easy. It can be difficult, time-consuming, and fraught with anxiety. These ten tips will help you successfully give your baby one of her most important lifelong gifts - her name.

1. Start looking at baby names early. You are likely to change your mind often, so the more time you allow, the easier it will be.

2. Use the internet. There are lots of great resources online, from baby name lists, to articles about the meanings and origins of names, to forums.

3. Classic is classic for a reason. Classic means time-tested, well-loved. Classic names always work well.

4. Don’t be too trendy or cool. For example, Brittany was # 3 on the popularity charts in 1990. Today, it doesn’t make the top 50. Tastes and fashions change.

5. The pressure to use names that have been “handed-down” for generations may be hard to resist. But you should try. Alfred isn’t what it used to be.

6. Pay attention to what a name may mean, even if the meaning is obscure. The biblical name Helah, for example, actually means “rust.” In this age of the internet, any meanings will be dug up by your child’s middle school friends, so be sure to do a background check on names you are considering.

7. Don’t make it too hard to pronounce. There’s a reason why Caoimhe (pronounced “kee-va”) hasn’t made it into the Top 100 yet.

8. Make sure it works with your surname. If your last name is Tree, don’t name your son Ash or your daughter Jade. And if your last name is Johnson, please avoid John.

9. Consider the siblings, present or planned. If you already have a daughter named Caroline, it would be a little odd to name your son Flint.

10. Finally, be proud of the name you pick. If you’ve done your research, and agonized over it, you’ve done the best you can. And that’s a special gift for your new baby.

Diesel engines are vastly untapped when it comes to horsepower. Prime example-the 2006 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel. This truck ships from the factory with a respectable 325 horsepower. But now, thanks to the Edge Juice Performance Module with Attitude In-Cab you can jump to over 425 at the push of a button.

Along with ungodly gobs of power, you’ll also enjoy a full compliment of gauges including Boost PSI, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), Barometric Pressure, Speed (MPH), Engine Coolant Temp, Intake Temp, Load %, Slip %, Transmission Temp, Throttle %, RPM and Backdown % due to excessive EGT or Boost. You can view any combination of four variables at once on the Attitude Monitor.

Another feature I like is the built-in turbo timer. This option will increase the life of your turbo by running the engine after you turn off the truck until a specific EGT (set by you) is reached.

Installing the Edge Juice and Attitude Module

Overall, installation is fairly easy. There are quite a few connections associated with the gauges, but the kit comes with detailed instructions and pictures coinciding with the various stages of install.

One of the most difficult tasks is installing the EGT probe. For this, you’ll need to drill and tap your exhaust manifold to accept the threaded end of the probe.

All the other wiring is pretty straightforward with connections necessary at the injectors, MAP sensor, OBDII data link, ignition (for turbo timer), power and ground.

The kit comes with a mounting bracket for the Attitude in-cab module, but I thought it looked a little cheesy, so I opted for an A-Pillar Gauge Pod. You can pick these up for around $75 and they give a nice finished look to the install.

Power Levels

Although Edge claims 5 different power levels, there are actually 7. Level 0 for stock settings, Level 1 for 25 HP, Level 2 for 40 HP, Level 3 for 60 HP, Level 4 for 80 HP, level 5 for 100 HP and Level 6 for 160 HP.

To get level 6 you have to contact Edge directly and get what they call a “hot unlock code” which you enter right into the Attitude module. According to Edge “There is a cost associated with accessing level 6 and a release liability waiver must be signed.” This last part makes me think level 6 could do bad things in the wrong hands…namely mine, which is why I haven’t “unlocked” this feature just yet.

Safety Features for Your Diesel Engine

One of the biggest reasons I purchased the Edge Module was the safety/engine protection features it offers. Along with the diesel turbo-timer that prolongs turbo life by allowing it to cool down properly, the Edge Juice has an audible alarm system that alerts you when dangerous conditions are present. You can preset alerts for EGT, Boost Pressure, Engine Temp, Trans Tem and speed.

Drive Test

In a word: Wow. The performance gains are incredible all the way through the power band. Low end, middle, top end…all show marked improvement over stock. On the freeway you’ll find yourself doing 80 with plenty of pedal left. The only drawback I’ve seen is an increase in smoke…not really a big deal, but it does piss other drivers off sometimes.

At the higher power settings, fuel economy did not increase or decrease. At power level 5 you can expect the same mileage as stock. At lower levels (1 & 2) I went from 14.9 MPG to 16.5 mixed highway and city driving.

Overall

I give this product a serious thumbs up. I picked up the Edge Juice with Attitude Module for $899 and the A-pillar gauge pod for $75. So for less than a grand I have all the horsepower I could want, a whole set of digital gauges and an automatic turbo timer to boot.

If you are a beginner, don’t be scared everybody out there started where you are. If you want to build your own internet business, start by determining what you would like to sell online or what you think you could help people with.

If you are selling a product or service first you should start by getting a paypal account which is free and perfect for new businesses because you dont have any up front fees or monthly fees, you only pay a percentage of your profits. To move on to your website, get a program like microsoft front page, I know programs like this look a bit complicated at the beginning but trust me if you just play around with it copying and pasting stuff a few hours a day, you will see it is just as easy as using microsoft word. Make yourself a nice banner at the top using photoshop, again just playing around with the simple tools of these programs you can do some really cool stuff.

When ever you encounter a problem, go to Google and make a search with your question and most likely you will find a forum or a website that will help answer your question or lead you to someone that can. Your website has to look attractive, so start by determining what colors you want your background to be and the text etc… Go to other websites selling similar products as yours to get some ideas. Get a program like AAA Logo, you can make all sorts of cool clipart with this program that you can add to your site to make it look more professional. Another thing you should keep in mind is that your website will never be perfect it takes constant attention to continue increasing the look and effectiveness of it so be patient. You can even create your first website using one of those free hosting and website building companies, it’s a good way to practice and get the look you want your website to be.

Try to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to make cool little designs to put onto your website. Once you have your product and you’ve learned to create web pages, just go ahead and find a hosting company like godaddy for example, it costs as little as $40 per year including you domain name. Take your time picking your domain and make sure it has your product name in it because your website adress is important in achieving top rankings in google for that keyword. In order to put your website live you need to upload you web pages, it’s as easy as copying and pasting files into a folder, you just need a login name and password wich the hosting company provides you with. The reason I am writing this article is to boost you to do it, so many people including me did’nt know how to do all this, have a positive attitude and keep in mind that nothing will block you from your goal. If you have any questions or need help with any of these steps I would be more that happy to help you out.

When you were a kid, there was a neighbourhood mechanic who took care of all your family’s automotive woes. Maybe you would tag along with your parents to the corner garage, where fan belts, spark plugs and tins of coolant were the extent of the supplies needed to get back on the road.

Times have changed and today, the automotive supply business has grown to become one of the world’s most profitable industries. Automobile manufacturers are constantly under pressure to churn out unique new models. As a result, the automotive supply industry has grown every year to keep up with the demand for new parts to fix these new vehicles. The increased demand has also created an increase in supply. Many entrepreneurial people have opened their own supply shops to cater to the ever-increasing number of automobile owners and enthusiasts. Drivers want the best quality money can buy, and suppliers are happy to oblige with high quality components, parts and systems. It sometimes seems that when it comes to car supplies, money is no object.

Many of the automotive parts and component suppliers are involved in the distribution of original equipment manufacture (OEM) parts. In order to remain competitive against lower priced after-market competitors, these OEM dealers will often provide discounts on original and second hand parts. Thanks to the Internet, these suppliers are able to reach a massive market.

Internet Automotive Supply Stores

Car owners and enthusiasts want dependable automotive suppliers who can provide secure, dependable service, good quality and good selection; and of course, they want it all at a discounted price. If prices are too high or the product isn’t up to par, these demanding consumers can and will easily take their business elsewhere.

No longer do local drivers visit the neighbourhood garage or automotive supply store for parts. Today’s complicated vehicles demand a huge selection of intricate parts to stay running at full capacity — or just to stay running at all. The mom and pop corner shops of yesteryear just don’t offer the quality or the selection that the market demands today. As a result, automotive consumers are shopping around the world — on the Internet — to find exactly what they need.

Countless online automotive suppliers have flooded the Internet with options. It’s a welcome shift in the industry that favors suppliers and consumers alike. With an online presence that literally opens them up to the global market, automotive suppliers now have a virtually limitless market, resulting in equally limitless profits. At the same time, consumers are now able to access a world of selection. The option to shop from suppliers around the world means consumers can find the parts they need at more affordable prices.

Get the Most From Internet Automotive Suppliers

Like all industries, the arrival of the Internet brought big changes to automotive suppliers. Consumers can log on and find exactly what they need, with a world of possibilities right at their fingertips. Any and every type of automotive part can be found online, usually at reduced prices, and these parts can be easily shipped anywhere in the world. To access this incredible global market, consumers simply log in and enter a search for the specific parts they require.

In seconds, thousands of website listings are immediately posted. There are major automotive suppliers, and there are names relatively unheard of. As with any e-commerce industry, selecting a reputable automotive supplier online should always be the number one priority. Consumers must always remember that the Internet is a huge place; for every trusted and authorized dealer, there are unscrupulous distributors just waiting to take someone’s money. For this reason, choosing to deal with a well-known name can be a safer bet, for both better quality and more helpful service. One must purchase discount automotive supplies from unknown dealers with great caution; they may send the wrong parts, no parts at all or worse of all, faulty parts that can cause irreparable further damage to your vehicle.

It is possible to get a great deal on the Internet. As with any product, shop around to be sure you’re getting good quality, trusted service and a fair price.

Comfortable body building apparel is very important. Cotton is the best material for items of body building apparel because there is a lot of sweating associated with body building and moisture created from sweating requires a good material to absorb it. The right body building apparel should make you feel great even during the most strenuous exercises.

T-shirts, tank tops, fleece shirts, workout pants and various other articles are important to the body builder. By far, the favorite item of body building apparel is the tank top. Many sportswear manufacturers have declared it the top selling piece of clothing. It comes in a variety of colors and at very low prices, not more than a few bucks, is affordable to all.

The tank top is most athletes’ first choice for their favorite piece of apparel since it gives a nice view of the buffed up muscles and it makes one aware of the progress they have made in the gym. Tank tops really make one feel great particularly if the results of intensive workouts are obvious. One thing to remember, you shouldn’t get too tight a top tank as it will keep your skin wet all the time when you get sweaty.

Pants and shorts are equally important body building apparel. You not only have to be stylish but first and foremost you should be comfortable when working out. Baggy pants are in high demand because a relaxed fit is what most athletes look for. There is also the choice of large and narrow ankle cuffs for increased ease of movement and the choice of colors and sizes is incredible.

Last but not least, we should also mention the special weight lift shoes that meet the requirements and rigors of extreme sports, since strength sports usually need special footwear that assures adherence and extra protection. Check out the internet for large choices and prices for body building apparel. You won’t regret it.

Performance tuning is the tuning of an engine to increase the power output, torque, and responsiveness of the engine as well as the reliability and economy. To performance tune the engine, it must be strong enough to endure the extra power, sometimes far stronger than the standard engine. Also when Performance Tuning the car you must take into account the transmission, suspension and the brakes to make sure that these match the power output and torque of the engine as this will affect the overall performance of the car and make it more reliable and competitive. Most people want to increase the power output of an engine. The main way that is used to do this is to increase the rate and efficiency of combustion in an engine. This is achieved by putting more fuel/air mixture into the engine, using a fuel with higher energy content, burning it more rapidly, and getting rid of the waste products more rapidly - this increases volumetric efficiency. The specific ways this is done include:

? Increasing the engine displacement. This can be done by “boring” - increasing the diameter of the cylinders and pistons, or by “stroking” - using a crankshaft with a longer stroke (in combination with pistons of shorter compression height, to maintain the original compression ratio), or both.

? Using larger or multiple carburetors, to create more fuel/air mixture to burn, and to get it into the engine more quickly. In modern engines, fuel injection is more often used, and may be modified in a similar manner.

? Increasing the size of the valves in the engine, thus decreasing the restriction in the path of the fuel/air mixture entering, and the exhaust gases leaving the cylinder. Using multiple valves per cylinder results in the same thing - it is often more practical to have several small valves than have larger single valves.

? Using larger bored, smoother, less contorted intake and exhaust manifolds. This helps maintain the velocity of gases. Similarly, the ports in the cylinder can be enlarged and smoothed to match. This is termed “Cylinder head porting”, usually with the aid of an air flow bench for testing and verifying the efficiency of the modifications.

? The larger bore may extend right through the complete exhaust system, using larger diameter piping and low back pressure mufflers, and through the intake system, with larger diameter air boxes and high-flow, high-efficiency air filters. Muffler modifications will change the sound of the car’s engine, usually making it louder; for some tuners this is in itself a desirable property.

? Increasing the valve opening height (lift), by changing the profiles of the camshaft or the lift (lever), ratio of the valve rockers (OHV engines), or cam followers (OHC engines).

? Optimizing the valve timing to improve burning efficiency - usually this increases power at one range of operating RPM at the expense of reducing it at others. For many applications this compromise is acceptable. Again this is usually achieved by a differently profiled camshaft. See also Four-stroke cycle Valve Timing, variable valve timing.

? Raising the compression ratio, which makes more efficient use of the cylinder pressure developed and leading to more rapid burning of fuel, by using larger compression height pistons or thinner head gasket, or by milling “shaving” the cylinder head.

? Forced Induction; adding a turbocharger or supercharger. The fuel/air mass entering the cylinders is increased by compressing the air first, usually mechanically.

? Using a fuel with higher energy content or by adding an oxidizer such as nitrous oxide.

? Changing the tuning characteristics electronically, by changing the firmware of the engine management system (EMS). This chip tuning often works because modern engines are designed to give a great deal of raw power, which is then reduced by the engine management system to make the engine operate smoothly over a wider RPM range, with low emissions. By analogy with an operational amplifier, the EMS acts as a feedback loop around an engine with a great deal of open loop gain. Many modern engines are now of this type and amenable to this form of tuning. Naturally many other design parameters are sacrificed in the pursuit of power. The choice of modification depends greatly on the degree of performance enhancement desired, budget, and the characteristics of the engine to be modified. Intake, exhaust, and chip upgrades are usually amongst the first modifications made as they are the cheapest, make reasonably general improvements (whereas a different camshaft, for instance, requires trading off performance at low engine speeds for improvements at high engine speeds), can often improve fuel economy, generally don’t affect engine reliability much (because no moving parts are modified), and are in any case essential to take full advantage of any further upgrades.

? Manufacturer Detuned Engines - Changing the tuning characteristics electronically, by changing the firmware of the engine management system (EMS). This chip tuning also works because many manufacturers produce one engine which is used in a range of models and the power and torque characteristics are determined solely by the engine management system software. This allows the manufacturers to sell cars in various markets with different tax and emissions regulations without the huge development cost of designing different engines. Cross platform engine sharing also allows for a single engine to be used by different brands, tuned to suit their particular market.
